Thailand faces earthquake risk from active faults inside the country as well as seismic sources in the surrounding region. Large earthquakes are infrequent, but past events show that the more frequent moderate earthquakes can significantly affect buildings, infrastructure, utility systems and everyday life — particularly in the dense northern cities such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao and Lampang.
The National Earthquake Research Center (EARTH), under the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, has therefore held the Thailand Symposium on Earthquake Research (TSER) on a continuing basis: the 1st in 2023 in Bangkok, the 2nd in 2024 in Phang Nga, and the 3rd in 2025 at the Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University.
TSER2026, the 4th edition, takes place on 14–15 December 2026 at Kantary Hills, Chiang Mai under that theme. It focuses on recognising and assessing risk in advance, and on presenting earthquake research and innovation that supports prevention and mitigation — developing the knowledge, technology and management approaches that can be applied in practice, leading to a “resilient city” able to withstand, adapt to and recover from earthquake hazards effectively.
